taking the pain away {coconut cake}

This Memorial Day weekend was eventful to say the least. It started out relaxing with a fantastic lobster fest to look forward to, but then on Sunday while I was busy shopping, I got the call. Dave (husband) had been in a mountain biking accident, he'd fallen 8 feet off a cliff, on to a sharp rock, and was being rushed to the emergency room.
His friend's described it as a "clean cut" telling me how lucky he was that it hadn't hit his spine or head. It's a 10" deep cut, by the hip where all that fleshy lovehandle meat lives (yeah for that - it protected him!).
80 stitches later, along with several gruesome phone-text images, he was home resting, and I've been nurse Amber on-call ever since. I've got the meds all spaced out, his dose times all in line and everything he needs at arms reach.
And now, about that delectable 4 layer coconut cake - our friend Jenny made it and brought it for Dave the next morning. Her husband was with Dave at the time of the fall and is pretty much still in shock from it all. This cake has been rocking our world, nothing like something sweet to brighten up the day!

That's terrible! I hope you're both doing ok now that the shock has worn off and I hope the meds are helping him from being in too much pain. What a horrible way to spend the weekend! Looks like you need some more cake, or at least something else to help numb the pain now that the luscious looking cake is just about gone. If I lived closer I'd totally bake you something yummy or bring you a few bottles of wine!!

sarah & cyndi & lee,
you are so sweet, thanks for the kind words! It's comforting to know there are really great people out there in the blogging world!

Sorry to hear about that rather ick end to your weekend. Hope he is feeling better soon. That cake does look good though but probably not worth a fall off a cliff.

oh my goodness Amber! 80 STITCHES!!!! I am so glad nothing worse happened - how insane! An 8 foot fall! I'm still trying to wrap my head around how dangerous a fall he took and how love handles saved the day. I knew they were good for something. Give him lots of love and care and we'll be wishing for a fast recovery!

Ack! If I ever fall 8 feet off a mountain bike I better land on my tummy to absorb the landing! Of course we both know that will NEVER happen as I am not one for mountain bikes. Or beach cruisers really. Steering straight is so freaking hard!

Kisses to the hubs and to you--sometimes being the nurse can be just as painful, if not more so.

So sorry to hear! It reminds me of Ryan's spill in Russian River the summer of our wedding. I hope Dave can walk. Wishing for a quick recovery for both of you (it's tough being the nurse) Xo

I have to confess that up until this point, Ive been a lurker, but this post has brought me out of the woodwork to say I am so sorry about your husbands accident and glad to hear that things werent worse, and that hes recovering well.

My brother was in a terrible sea kayaking accident in Biddeford, ME about this time last year, and his best friend drowned...so my thoughts are always with adventurers as they follow their spirit.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

OMG! Give Dave my very best, so glad he was w/ friends and hope that he had a good doc put in his stitches! So very glad that he had some 'extra' cushioning to take the brunt of the fall. You guys take care!
